Days after the Japanese conducted a surprise attack against US forces in Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt held an urgent meeting with Joint Chiefs of Staff to discuss American military response to their enemy in the Pacific. The President, visibly preoccupied about American morale after the treacherous Japanese carrier airstrike, told his senior officers that mainland Japan had to be bombed as soon as possible. This, he thought, would boost the country's morale, increase voluntary enlistments and fortify war bonds. The result of his order was the Doolittle Raid, under the command of renowned aviator and engineer, James H. Doolittle, whom in his autobiography later wrote (QUOTE): "An attack on the Japanese homeland would cause confusion in the minds of the Japanese people and sow doubt about the reliability of their leaders... Americans badly needed a morale boost." The operation took place on April 18, 1942, and it was a resounding success thanks to the newly converted medium bomber, the B-25 Mitchell. The squadron of B-25s bombed Tokyo and Honshu, claiming over 60 lives and injuring 500 hundred people. Although damage was relatively minimal, it achieved the desired effects. US morale drastically increased because it proved American aircraft could take the fight to the heart of the enemy no matter where they stood. In contrast, the Japanese fighting spirit took a heavy blow, for they realized that their archipelago was not as impenetrable as they thought it was. The mission and the B-25's Doolittle performance became so famous that it easily overshadowed the B-25's next combat role. Equipped with a powerful 75 mm M4 tank gun, a dozen high caliber Machine Guns, rockets, and a 3,000-pound bomb load capacity, the B-25 Model G was a heavy-hitting gunship to be reckoned with. - Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories. The B-25 bomber gained fame in the daring April 1942 Doolittle Raid. Lt. Col. James Doolittle humiliated the Japanese military by penetrating some of the world’s most formidable air defenses and dropping bombs a stone’s throw away from the Emperor’s Palace. The Doolittle Raid's B-25s were the only aircraft to bomb Tokyo until 1944, when B-29 Superfortresses began operating from the Mariana Islands. The B-25 bomber soldiered in every theater of war, excelling in multiple roles, chiefly as a ground-attack aircraft later in the war. The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American medium bomber that was introduced in 1941 and named in honor of Major General William "Billy" Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation.Used by many Allied air forces, the B-25 served in every theater of World War II, and after the war ended, many remained in service, operating across four decades. Produced in numerous variants, nearly 10,000 B-25s were built. These included several limited models such as the F-10 reconnaissance aircraft, the AT-24 crew trainers, and the United States Marine Corps' PBJ-1 patrol bomber. The Air Corps issued a specification for a medium bomber in March 1939 that was capable of carrying a payload of 2,400 lb (1,100 kg) over 1,200 mi (1,900 km) at 300 mph (480 km/h) North American Aviation used its NA-40B design to develop the NA-62, which competed for the medium bomber contract. No YB-25 was available for prototype service tests. In September 1939, the Air Corps ordered the NA-62 into production as the B-25, along with the other new Air Corps medium bomber, the Martin B-26 Marauder "off the drawing board". Interior of huge aircraft factory where rows of bombers are being assembled North American B-25 Mitchell production in Kansas City in 1942 Early into B-25 production, NAA incorporated a significant redesign to the wing dihedral. The first nine aircraft had a constant-dihedral, meaning the wing had a consistent, upward angle from the fuselage to the wingtip. This design caused stability problems. "Flattening" the outer wing panels by giving them a slight anhedral angle just outboard of the engine nacelles nullified the problem and gave the B-25 its gull wing configuration. Less noticeable changes during this period included an increase in the size of the tail fins and a decrease in their inward tilt at their tops. NAA continued design and development in 1940 and 1941. Both the B-25A and B-25B series entered USAAF service. The B-25B was operational in 1942. Combat requirements led to further developments. Before the year was over, NAA was producing the B-25C and B-25D series at different plants. Also in 1942, the manufacturer began design work on the cannon-armed B-25G series. The NA-100 of 1943 and 1944 was an interim armament development at the Kansas City complex known as the B-25D2. Similar armament upgrades by U.S-based commercial modification centers involved about half of the B-25G series. Further development led to the B-25H, B-25J, and B-25J2. The gunship design concept dates to late 1942 and NAA sent a field technical representative to the SWPA. The factory-produced B-25G entered production during the NA-96 order followed by the redesigned B-25H gunship. The B-25J reverted to the bomber role, but it, too, could be outfitted as a strafer. NAA manufactured the greatest number of aircraft in World War II, the first time a company had produced trainers, bombers, and fighters simultaneously (the AT-6/SNJ Texan/Harvard, B-25 Mitchell, and the P-51 Mustang). It produced B-25s at both its Inglewood main plant and an additional 6,608 aircraft at its Kansas City, Kansas, plant at Fairfax Airport. After the war, the USAF placed a contract for the TB-25L trainer in 1952. This was a modification program by Hayes of Birmingham, Alabama. Its primary role was reciprocating engine pilot training. ▶︎ Go inside the UK Airshow with the Flying Bulls on Red Bull TV 🤍 ▶︎ Follow our Red Bull Air Race playlist: 🤍 With its cool retro look, the gleaming silver North American B-25J “MITCHELL” is a very special highlight, even in the Flying Bulls valuable collection. Built in Kansas City in 1945, it shared the good fortune of the Corsair in never having to fly off to war. Instead it was used as an electronic test platform. Later it was flown to Arizona’s Davis Air Force Base, an aircraft cemetery, to be mothballed. Apparently it was well treated there, because in the 1970s a fire-fighting firm purchased the aircraft in order to put it to work putting out fires from the air. However, it was never put to that use. And now the aircraft enthusiasts enter the picture: in the 1980s a flying club in Kansas City bought the Mitchell, rechristening it the Fairfax Ghost. The club continue to fly the plane until 1994, when it was discovered and, after some discussion, purchased by Sigi Angerer, former chief pilot of The Flying Bulls. The collection, after all, already included the Corsair, the T-28B and the Grumman Widgeon, and a B-25 would be – at least temporarily – a new highlight. But first there was lots of work to be done, because the Mitchell was not at all in good shape. First it got a complete overhaul in the US: it was restored and converted into a civilian version with a comfortable interior. By September 1997 the work had been completed to the point that the Mitchell was ready to undertake the flight to Europe across the North Atlantic. At the beginning of 2001, the aircraft was moved to Salzburg Airport. Now the Mitchell cuts a good figure, whether serving as a photographic model at Hangar-7 or taking part in one of the many great air shows in which it flies. This is the film used to train pilots on how to fly the North American B-25 Mitchell during World War 2 . The Navy Department produced it for use by all services. Named after Billy Mitchell, the controversial pioneer of heavy bombing, this is the plane that Jimmy Doolittle chose to fly off the deck of carrier Hornet for the dramatic raid on Tokyo. Extremely versatile, the North American B-'25 was the US's most produced medium bomber, fighting in all theaters and exported to virtually all Allied air forces. An effective level bomber, it could also be equipped with a multitude of additional machine guns, rockets, and even a 75mm canon, for low level ground attack. "After watching Spencer Tracy roar off the deck in "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," I became a B-25 fan!" The 2021 Thunder Over Michigan airshow hosted a massive gathering of North American B-25 Mitchell bombers, bringing together 14 of these rare pieces of history. This video combines footage from the Saturday afternoon and Sunday shows, when 13 B-25s started in unison, ran their engines up together, then took off for low solo flybys. After the flybys, eight of the B-25s joined together for a formation flyover before landing. Unfortunately the 14th B-25 (Georgia Mae) had a mechanical issue after the Saturday morning show and remained grounded for the rest of the weekend. The airshow is held annually at Willow Run airport near Detroit, Michigan as a fundraiser for the Yankee Air Museum. The 2021 show also hosted both the US Navy Blue Angels and the USAF Thunderbirds at the same event! After several years of hard work and dedication, the awesome team at CAF CENTEX got the North American Aviation B-25 Mitchell 'Yellow Rose' back in the air and I was lucky enough to help bring her off the ground. The North American Aviation B-25 Mitchell was the same type of airplane used in the famous Doolittle Raid during World War II in 1942. I kept the audio all natural so you can experience the heart-stopping roar of the two Wright R-2600 engines, making 1700 horsepower each, although I'll admit I snuck a shot from another B-25 in there too… if you catch which one it was, let me know in the comments down below! Many of you know me as a DCS YouTuber, but I'm also a real life warbird pilot, with almost 200 hours in various warbirds, including a Pilot in Command type rating in the North American Aviation B-25 Mitchell. If you love warbirds and want to see more, you better stick around the channel!

This ride really must be compared to those I took on this machine previously. With all other factors known to be good and correct - I even fitted the correct high compression piston recently, to replace the low compression one previously fitted and thought to be the culprit - I became more and more suspicious of the valve timing and these suspicions paid off, as the cam timing was over retarded by two teeth, or 24 degrees! As seen here, there has been a complete transformation and finally, this machine seems to perform as it should. Happy days!
